  • Embrace your Outer Villain - In Costume

You’ve been invited to a party and the theme is ‘Villains’. In today’s politically correct world, you will be better off steering clear of real-life criminals or infamous people who were around in living memory – especially if they are alive today. Don’t do a ‘Prince Harry’ and dress up as a Nazi – bad idea. Look further back in history, or, better still, opt for a fictional character and you will have plenty of scope.

    Real-life Villains throughout History:

    • Jesse James
    • Bonnie and Clyde
    • Guy Fawkes
    • Richard III
    • Edward Teach / Blackbeard
    • Vlad the Impaler
    • Attila the Hun

    Buccaneer

Fancy dress is all about having fun, so don’t get too serious with your villain costume. Maybe there will be children attending this event, so you don’t want to wear something too terrifying. If these bad guys are child friendly enough to make it into Disney films, then they are child friendly enough to attend the Villain Fancy Dress Party. An added bonus is that most children will recognise these costumes and can dress up as these characters themselves...

    Disney Villains:

    • Cruella de Vil – 101 Dalmations
    • Captain Hook – Peter Pan
    • Horned King – The Black Cauldron
    • Jafa – Aladdin
    • Gaston – Beauty and the Beast
    • Maleficent – Sleeping Beauty
    • Evil Queen Grimhilde / Witch – Snow White
    • Ursula – The Little Mermaid
    • Mother Gothel – Tangled
    • Queen of Hearts – Alice in Wonderland
    • Scar – The Lion King

    Queen of Hearts

Maybe you want to get creative with your outfit. Here are some other well-known fictional characters…

    Other Fictional Villains:

    • The Big Bad Wolf – Red Riding Hood
    • The Joker – Batman
    • Mr Burns – The Simpsons
    • Medusa – Greek Mythology
    • Darth Vador – Star Wars
    • Dr. Evil – Austin Powers
    • Voldemort – Harry Potter
    • Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare on Elm Street
    • Michael Myers – Halloween
    • The Wicked Witch of the West – The Wizard of Oz
    • The Shark – Jaws
    • Gru – Despicable Me
    • Magneto – Xmen
    • Chucky – Child’s Play
    • Gollum – The Lord of the Rings
    • Saruman – The Lord of the Rings
    • Bill Cutting, “The Butcher” – Gangs of New York
    • Mystique – Xmen
    • Bellatrix Lestrange – Harry Potter

Maybe you don’t want to narrow your costume down to one specific character? So you could choose a stereotype instead, which is a great idea if you're attending as a group:

  • Sponsored Fancy Dress Walk for GOSH

    415139397

Spiderman, the Gruffalo and fairies completed a sponsored fancy dress walk around an historic house to raise money for life-saving heart equipment at a children’s hospital.

The fund-raiser for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London happened at Blicking Hall, near Aylsham, was joined by about 20 families from across Norfolk dressed in colourful outfits.

Participants included Kathryn Howes and Michelle Ward, whose young sons were born with holes in the heart and Julie Johnson, whose daughter has an enlarged heart. All three children are cared for by GOSH.

Organiser Mrs Howes, 37, from Lancaster Avenue in Watton, said: “The turn out is absolutely brilliant. Everyone looks amazing. Your life turns upside down when you learn your child has a heart problem.”

Her 20-month-old son, Maximus ,was born with two holes in the heart and the problem was discovered when he was 15-weeks-old after he suffered heart failure. Maximus had heart surgery at GOSH when he was 19-weeks-old and is now on medication.

The two and a half mile walk was for the Love Hearts Appeal which is raising cash for intensive care equipment at GOSH. A similar event was held at Blickling Hall last year and raised £1,600.

  • 5 adorable fancy dress costumes for kids

A Kid’s Fancy Dress costume doesn’t have to be scary because it can also be cute. Not only can toddlers wear an adorable fancy dress costume but also young children. If parents don’t know what they should buy for their children, there are many to choose from:

    Bugs Bunny

An official Bugs Bunny costume is perfect for older toddlers. By purchasing this costume, a young child will look very cute, especially as bunny ears are provided. With gloves also included, it can be worn on multiple occasions because it is easy to clean. Even if a toddler gets messy when eating food at a party, it can be worn again.

    Dorothy

    Dorothy costume

Played by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie ‘The Wizard of Oz’, Dorothy’s costume cannot be mistaken for anything else. With red ruby shoes, a chequered dress and a white blouse, a Dorothy costume can be worn by children of all ages. As a basket is usually included that comes with a dog that looks just like Toto, it can be worn when a girl’s friends are dressed as the Scarecrow or the Tin Man.

    Winnie the Pooh

Suitable for children as young as four, a Winnie the Pooh costume can also be worn by tweens. With a furry headpiece that looks just like the lovable bear, a Winnie the Pooh costume also comes with a yellow pair of trousers and a red t-shirt. If many siblings will be attending the same party, they could each dress as various characters that were also created by A.A. Milne. As well as Winnie the Pooh, a Tigger and Piglet costume can be worn.

    Woody

When trick or treating with their parents, a young child can be Woody. One of the lead characters in the ‘Toy Story’ movies, a Woody costume is available in a variety of sizes. Just like with a Winnie the Pooh costume, a Woody outfit can be worn by young children and also teenagers. As it is available in an adult design, both a father and son can be Woody. When walking from one house to another, they could get a lot of sweets because of how cute they look.

    Harry Potter

    Harry Potter costume

Having appeared in eight films, Harry Potter is popular with children of all ages. By choosing a Harry Potter costume, all accessories are usually provided. Along with a robe that has a crimson collar and a white shirt, a tie and a wand can also be supplied. As the Harry Potter movies continue to be televised and J.K. Rowling’s books read, choosing this particular character is popular, especially as a child can pretend to be the young wizard. To complete this costume, buy face paint in order to recreate Harry’s lightning bolt scar. When a brother wears a Kid’s Fancy Dress costume such as this, his sister can be Hermione or one of the other characters that appeared in the Harry Potter movies, such as Luna Lovegood or Bellatrix Lestrange.
